This technology is unique in its kind: an antimicrobial substance (quaternary ammonium) is bonded to a silane (silicone derivative that alters the properties of a surface permanently) to obtain an organofunctional silane, i.e. a molecule active against microorganisms. The effect is caused by two forces: the first due to the aliphatic chain that attracts the lipids of the membrane, the second to the positive charge of the nitrogen atom is opposed to the negative charge of the microbe.
